Write in English - Visitor's Corner

Wonderful, thanks for your explanations @melilot . Same here in Germany. It’s still possible to get Priority labels but it’s getting harder. Some post offices don’t hand them out anymore because the staff believes that the stickers aren’t necessary anymore.

Bonjour Melilot,
it worked with a google-account, but a few minutes later la poste came up with a fee of 15€. Haven’t been able to change the tranportation to something without signature from the recipient. - Thanks for your help, but in a few days I will try the personal way and hope to find a postman or woman who understands my french or a bit of english

@Speicher3: the online shop of the deutsche post has a roll of 250pcs for little money, 1,19 I think and if you order stamps the same time it comes free house without porto. But to be honest, I look out for some good looking par avion/airmail stamps, even if some say, for postcards they make no sense.

That’s something to know : they deliver abroad (or at least in Germany) with a signature, which implies more costs and you got to be there so sign…

Here it’s free and without signature as long as you order at least for 25 euros.

A thing to know is that in France you can (usually) find more choice of stamps in post offices dedicated to enterprises, called “Espaces clients pro” (in areas with a lot of enterprises) and you can go there without being an enterprise. In Paris they still have the big old files full of stamps (and Priority stickers sometimes) just like all post offices did 30 years ago  Less people too, so less queuing. I have not been there since the covid crisis though.

In Bar-Tabac it all depends on the manager, if he orders a good choice of stamps or just Marianne. Touristic areas or not, too.

I am looking for a French postcrosser - her name is Dominique - her user name was doumik - but may have been a little different to that with a number - I cannot find her on the main site
She lived in Issenheim

If anyone can put her in contact with me, that would be great - i’m especially looking for her postal :love_letter: address

thanks

yes thankyou - it looks to be her

i didn’t think to look under that name - and her town/city doesn’t come up in the Grand Est region - otherwise i had to search through all french users
she has a different name on another forum and on the old forum was always doumik
i’ll send her a message - yay

thanks :rose:

What I did to find her:
I looked up on wikipedia what region of France her place belongs to and then did a user search for username *dom* in that area (no city selected, just the region).
That was really easy - you just have to know the little tricks

Bonjour,

I am looking for people whom I can swap my Japanese New Year postcards for your Cartes D’Art publisher postcards.

If you would like to swap with me, please message me with your offer. I can show you my offer in a private message.

Merci beaucoup!

In the spring, I will be vacationing on St. Martin in the Caribbean. Are the prices to send cards the same as Metropolitan France? Or, are there special rates due to St. Martin being overseas? Thanks for your help!

I’ve just been browsing through the discussions in the French group - when I see the word “French”/“français”, it’s like a magnet for me! It’s very interesting to learn that Par Avion has now been replaced by prioritaire. I usually don’t like newfangled changes like these - I must be an old fogey! - but I suppose if there’s no longer any surface mail, it makes sense. It will be a pity not to see those nice blue Par Avion stickers any more though. I’m going to treasure the ones I still have.

Yes the same for ultramarine territories as for metropolitans.

Bonjour! For friends in France -

Are there any pictorial/commemorative postmarks around the country for collection?
For example, in Canada, we have these:

In many countries, there are catalogues or even bulletins issued every month on their official postal website, but I’ve searched through LaPoste and couldn’t find any. Help appreciated!

Salut! My sister and I are going to France :fr: in April/May from Australia. We’re definitely going to Nantes and Paris and I’m planning on visiting the Postal Museum in Paris.
Can you please tell me the current international postal rate for postcards and any places I might find cool postcards? (I like retro, vintage, cat cards)
I am learning a little French each day and next week go the City of Melbourne Libraries French Club which is just starting up.
Merci beaucoup.

Diana

Salut Diana
I live in Nantes, I hope you’ll have a nice time! If you want any tips feel free to message me

The current rate just moved up to 1.80€ to everywhere but France, from the 1st of january. Although it can be a bit confusing because it seems like right now the transition hasn’t completely been made. So, if you go at the post office, ask for international stamps and that they give you 1.65€, then… I guess it means you can use those still  The infos are a bit confusing sometimes!
You can buy them in the “La Poste” stores, make sure you ask them for “beaux timbres” so that they give you the pretty ones, otherwise their first move might be to hand you the ugly basic Marianne ones with the QR code :stuck_out_tongue:

In Paris you’ll have no issue to find postcards, the touristy ones are pretty much everywhere (lowest prices are 0.30€ if you stumble across the right place, but it can go up easily so mind the place you’re in - it will tend to be higher by the Eiffel tower etc), and they most of the time also sell retro/vintage/cats etc.
So you can find a multitude in touristy street shops, but also in “bureau de tabac” shops which is where we buy newspaper/cigarettes.

My little tip is totally unrelated but my favorite place in Paris is the english bookstore “Shakespeare and company”, a must go-to :kissing_heart:

Thanks so much for the advice. I might come up with some questions about Nantes. My sister and I are travelling there to visit Pour L’Amour du Fil - a big quilting and embroidery show.

In Paris we visited the Musée de la Poste last year and it is really worth it. Right next to the museum there is a La Poste office that has quite a good selection of special stamps (“Beaux timbres”) and also offers hand cancellation stamps. In the Musée de La Poste itself there is a shop where you can also drop off mail. Here you can have your mail cancelled with special hand cancellation stamps from the museum. There are also special stamps from the museum. However, all the letters we franked with these stamps never arrived. But all the letters with normal stamps did.

In Nantes, I would recommend Le Lieu Unique. A great cultural centre in the former LU biscuit factory. Sometimes there is a nice market for handicrafts (also postcards) and a very good restaurant. The ornate tower of the former biscuit factory is also beautiful.
There is also a lot of culture and nice little shops in the city centre.
There is a solid post office on the Place de Bretagne, and around the corner another post office “La Poste Espace Clients Pro”. You can also go there as a normal customer. Sometimes you get a more specialised selection here.
Nantes has a small museum dedicated to Jules Verne and a great art museum. Nantes is also famous for “Les Machines de l’île”, a kind of steampunk park with mechanical animals. As an old friend of printing, I was thrilled by the printing museum in Nantes. And I recommend a visit to the bistro “La Cigale”. A beautiful bistro in opulent Art Nouveau style, considered one of the most beautiful in France.

Dear friends ! I need your help. I’m looking for affordable accommodation (preferably in Paris or not far from it). Can you please advise sites or places where I can see such accommodation (hotels, apartments, hostels, etc.). unfortunately I couldn’t find anything on booking, it’s too expensive :upside_down_face:

Hello !

Paris is very expensive, even for a coffee it is expensive !

What would you like to see or visit in Paris ? Or in France ? How long would you stay ? What would be your budget ?
