Where and What: Postcards in Australia

I’ve had some feedback that people would love a little mini-wiki of what can be bought and where, so I thought I’ll make a thread on the subject  This is Australia specific; physical stores IN Australia, and stores that may be outside Australia, but ship with fair prices in AUD to us, both price and postage.

Also, given that this is the Oceania category I’d be happy to add New Zealand and other OCE countries/territories, I just wasn’t sure if we have anyone to help us find places there yet
Note that if a list is very large I’ve thrown it under the little Summary tabs, click on those to get a full list
The Stores

Victoria:

Summary
  • Melbourne Museum has some postcards, a few standard designs and then more ‘out there’ designs based on current exhibits. One example; recently there were LOTS of Dino-themed designs because that’s their current big exhibit
  • NGV Melbourne
  • Melbourne Information Centre at the Town Hall
  • We’re fairly sure The Johnson Collection and Labassa have postcards.
  • The railway museum in Newport has cards. (tell them @secondhandrose sent you, a friend runs it! :O)
  • Dymocks in Collins Street Melbourne have boxed sets of postcards.
  • The Skydeck has a pack of Skydeck-themed cards, as well as Australia’s “highest up” postbox. You can buy stamps, and the person working there said something about staff possibly putting some sort of stamp on, but he wasn’t fully sure if it was a cancellation - and I didn’t want to take up too much time!
  • Auspost in the CBD always has a selection of their prepaids, and some suburbs/shopping centres will also have prepaids - both Knox, Eastland and Forest Hill did last I checked. Not all of them do, my local does not stock them as they don’t get bought so please be sure to ask!
  • Utopia Homewares has a stockist in Shepparton and supposedly appears at markets sometimes
  • In the Melbourne CBD you will see many stores named things like “Souveniers Australia” or “Tourist Australia” with a lot of Kangaroo type merch out the front. You can get some interesting designs here, I personally picked up a few Aboriginal dot painting postcards here I’m excited to use  Prices are approx. $1 a card I believe, and some of them have deals like 5 for $3 or something.
  • Thrift stores - not all will have some, however it is always worth looking through the greeting card boxes in ANY state, imo, I’ve found some really interesting cards that way!

Regional Vic; The Crafty Squirrel in Ballarat was advertising they had Japanese postcards. Expensive at $5.95 each, but very cool looking!

South Australia:

Summary

In Adelaide - lovely tourist cards of different sights around Adelaide, are available at the muesum gift shop on North Terrace for $1.00 each.
Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park have several animal postcards available.
In the Riverland; newsagents are a good place to find postcards.
There’s also a discount book store in Rundle Mall with some nice illustrated cards!
Rundle Mall post office has lots of prepaids, but maxicards are a bit less/something you have to ask for. The AusPost on the University of Adelaide North Terrace campus also has a variety or regular postcards (

Regional SA: In Port Pirie, the museum has some cards!
Tourist Information Centres are also a good place to look, both tourist views and postcards by local artists are often available. Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Ceduna, Port Pirie and the Barossa have great ranges available.

From @/klemmfamily, thank you!

New South Wales:

Australian National Maritime Museum has cards - here’s their online store.
Sydney from @/austviolin!

Summary

Newsagents largely don’t stock postcards but some do in the Western suburbs.
Tourist shops in the centre mostly do but notably not the prominent “Australia the Gift” near Circular Quay.
The Museum of Sydney has some relating to the present exhibition; I think you can still get some at the State Library.
Warragamba Dam Visitor’s Centre gives out sets of 9 historical photo postcards for free if you ask at the desk.
Some art shops and bookshops have ($10-15) wooden postcards which are good for occasionals.
Sydney Uni LPO has lots of old and new loose maxicards (earliest I saw was I think late 80s), Sydney viewcards, and some cards of the uni itself. Paddy’s Markets souvenir stallholders sell some lovely cards, not only viewcards but also nature (birds, animals, wildflowers, etc.).

Regional NSW: Dimmey’s in Lithgow (so possibly also other locations) has/had loads of very cheap postcards, I think I was charged 10c each.

Northern Territory:

Western Australia:

Western Australian Museum + their online store has cards including some artsy sets

Queensland:

Qantas Founders Museum has cards - be warned they’re BIG but courtesy of @missmelbourne, they’re lovely and feature Qantas planes
Brisbane list courtesy of @/ahmandah:

Summary

For Brisbane and Australian Animal postcards by Banksia Images:-
City Hall Gift Centre 231 Albert Street Brisbane
Skinnys, Uptown Shopping Centre Queen St Mall Brisbane

The GPO always has a good selection of prepaids, as does the LPO at Woolloongabba and Fairfield Gardens.

The LPO at St Lucia (University of Queensland campus) has, in addition to lots of prepaids, a huge variety of other touristy and animal cards, like Steve Parrish designs etc.

The Museum of Brisbane usually has a handful of really lovely designs that relate to a current exhibition. They’re not cheap though, up to $5 each.

The Queensland Art Museum has a decent range of their artworks on postcards and occasionally I’ve found popular box sets too, but only at the gift shop with all the books that’s on the river side of the building. The other gift shop near the cafe usually has stuff that relates to the current main exhibition and often does not have any postcards at all.

The Info Centre in the old theatre in Queen Street Mall usually has at least a couple of local viewcards, sometimes also some free/ad cards.

Op Shops are hit and miss, though I have found some great stashes on the odd occasion. The big Antiques Centre in Annerley always has lots of vintage cards, mostly overseas designs.

Bent Books in West End has local artist cards and also usually offers a range of cards from popular box sets available for purchase individually

Tasmania:
Red Parka
Wild Island

Australian Capital Territory: Parliament House has cards for $1 each, I assume there’s a giftshop somewhere on site?
ACT (temporary) the Floriade gift shop has a number of lovely cards when that’s on. (again, per @/austviolin, tysm!)

Online:

Summary
  • Auspost has an online store with decent prices on their prepaids, maxicards and shipping. Postage is generally $5 for standard but over a certain amount it is free. They do ship internationally for our tourist friends, you can stock up on cards before you visit. Also, please use their international zones + stamp prices pages for figuring out postage - I personally always send internationally with the $3 stamps, however I know not all Auspost offices agree with that/let you do that.
  • Australia Postcards is also a decent way to get tourist cards, they have relatively cheap shipping and their cards are approx. $1 each. Postage is approx. $2!
  • Closet Planner Addict has an “I Love Melbourne” postcrossing bundle, it comes with ID stickers for postcrossing and some beautiful cards. Their more standard designs sell for for roughly $3 each. All orders over $30 are free shipping according to them, yay! Standard shipping seems to be about $3.20 in Melbourne at least. They have both an etsy and an actual online store; PLEASE use the online store as it takes much less in fees
  • For our New Zealanders; NZ Post sells online here
  • Australiana Souvenirs - Retail shipping is approx. $3 and the cards are fairly cheap.
  • Brentos has some cards, they look absolutely lovely! The cards seem cheap but $7 shipping.
  • Doodads- 3D postcards - Approx. $10 shipping, however these are SO cute!!
  • Fishpond - Anywhere from $5-$30 for the actual cards; the expensive ones are mostly books/packs of multiple. $7.95 standard shipping.
  • Mitch Revs - $5 per postcard and $15 shipping :frowning: However, keeping because the designs are interesting!
  • The Curatoreum - Mostly postcard boxes, approx. $12 standard shipping.
  • Utopia Homewares $3.30 shipping, VERY cheap cards. They mention us by name in their postcard section, how lovely!! <3
  • zetta florence - Approx. $4 per card, $12.95 shipping. Very pretty designs!
  • GreenMiniCreative - $3.50 shipping on etsy, $5 shipping online store, has multiple IRL stockists
  • Art by Mirree - expensive shipping, however the creator may email you w/ a cheaper rate if you leave your cart. Designs are gorgeous - the “story” cards have writing all over the back so aren’t good for posting however.
  • Debra Hood - Brisbane city art (including a “Bluey” house)
  • Royal Mail - Are they Aussie? No! But, their shipping is relatively cheap and their issues are just adorable. Approx. $4 aud shipping with the cards themselves can be as cheap as $1 per card if you buy a set
  • Parliament House - Cards at $1 each, shipping starts from $4 in Aus.
  • Smart in Design - absolutely gorgeous cards sold by the designer. Can be expensive but look beautiful and worth it! FREE POSTAGE!!
*Banksia Images - a little pricey but nice tourist cards  FREE standard Auspost shipping
*Leaf Studios - beautiful cards, you do have to scroll a bit for the postcards but they’re $3 each and only $3 shipping by the looks of it!

Etsy;
{If you see the sellers below have brick-and-mortar stores and/or online stores, let me know as Etsy often takes high fees, let’s try and make sure more money goes to those who make beautiful things for us!}

Summary

*Those Pencil Shavings - queensland based with good shipping! We love to see it

Please put suggestions down below! I live in Victoria so unfortunately all I know is here, I’ve filled that out w/ some other online resources I know of, but that’s about all I know.

In Brisbane:

Online:

Tourist shops in the CBD, South Bank and Mt Coot-tha ditched all their stock of cheap local viewcards in the last year or so. Total bummer. I really liked some of the designs and I looked up one wholesaler New Millennium Images, but I haven’t investigated purchasing from them as I thought I saw somewhere that the minimum order is 50 cards and I can’t commit to that right now

I’ve purchased some of these cards by Mirree before, though you have to look at the designs carefully because the “story” cards have writing all over the back so aren’t good for posting: POSTCARDS – The Official Website ~ Art by Mirree (dreamsofcreation.com) When I first looked at the site, shipping was extraordinary (I expect it is based on shipping artwork, not just cards) so I didn’t go through with the purchase straight away and she ended up emailing me with a promo code for a cheaper rate.

Green Mini Creative has a website that sells directly, as well as listing brick and mortar stockists. And now I have a local store I just have to visit…

Edited to add all of the above, thanks @ahmandah ! That’s a bit disappointing to hear about the local tourist shops, I was hoping that’d be an aus wide thing :frowning:

Hi Blaze,
I’d like to add
NGV Melbourne
Melbourne Museum
Melbourne Information Centre at the Town Hall
I’m pretty sure The Johnson Collection and Labassa have postcards. My friend’s railway museum in Newport has cards. Dymocks in Collins Street Melbourne have boxed sets of postcards.
I’ll try to think of more.

Some other offbeat places I’ve bought cards

(Lots sold out at the moment — hopefully not permanent!)

(Sometimes have nice arty postcard sets. I liked the ones featuring Indigenous constellations)

(Good for fans of nautical or vintage/B&W cards)

(These are enormous postcards so be warned, but they are great. Illustrations of historical Qantas planes)

I’ve just updated the list, thanks to you both and Han from the discord!

Parliament House, Canberra - because don’t we all want a postcard of Tony Abbott?

Lots of cards of PMs, not enough of the building.

Postage starting from $4 in Australia.

Oh wow, that’s actually interesting - I wouldn’t have thought to look there :open_mouth: I do like the building ones a lot!! I’ll add it, thanks Helen

I guess we could write about the time he appointed himself Minister for Women! Or when he brought back knighthoods and gave one to Prince Philip. The time he ate a raw onion seems sane compared to these things

I feel like Tassie needs something listed, so here are 2 Hobart based ones:

When I went to Exmouth to watch th eclipse back in April I found a kind lady selling some very beautiful cards that she had designed.
Apart from the Eclipse cards, there were some very beautiful ocean or coastal-themed cards. All of them were high-relief.
Not very cheap but quite beautiful:

Since there is only one Sydney suggestion I’d thought I’d add to the list:

Newsagents largely don’t stock postcards but my best luck has been in very dusty ones in the Western suburbs.

Tourist shops in the centre mostly do but notably not the prominent “Australia the Gift” near Circular Quay which used to have some fantastic ones (e.g. a koala-shaped card).

The Museum of Sydney has some relating to the present exhibition; I think you can still get some at the State Library. Warragamba Dam Visitor’s Centre gives out sets of 9 historical photo postcards for free if you ask at the desk.

Some art shops and bookshops I’ve seen selling very expensive ($10-15) wooden postcards which are good for occasionals.

ACT (temporary) the Floriade gift shop has a number of lovely cards when that’s on.

Hope that list isn’t too long

Utopia Homewares has postcards made by an Australian Postcrosser. Very reasonably priced at 75 cents each. Utopia is a small family owned business spcialising in affordable gifts for all. Everything is handmade by them. Mostly online but do have a stockist in Shepparton, Vic and from time to time do markets.

Okay! All of the suggestions are in the list - Utopia already was but I’ll add the deets about markets

Has anyone else noticed these wonderful card designs from Australian Post? They are not prepaid and they are cards and not postcards.
But still, they look gorgeous!

Updated up to here, with an extra place I found today that has lovely slightly witchy vibes! Also, FoTiS, I love those cards! I’d buy a ton of them if they were sold in postcard form :open_mouth:
