I don’t know if this would be of any help, but here’s something I noticed
Tab title says 2. So I checked the notifications…
But later the tab title became zero yet there’s an unread notification.

It happened to me the other day too. I had gotten a PM from someone, but opening it and reading it didn’t make the notification go away. It eventually did disappear, but not until much later.
I think same thing happened to me too. I started to notice it after the last pm I received on December 1st.
Wonder they all had the similar situation.

For those experiencing this, does the mystery notification appear listed here?
I’m guessing it’s some odd caching issue as it is not hard for things to get slightly off sync until something clears up.
As a new Discourse version is bound to be released soon, it may be better to wait for that to see if the issue is still in there.

Ah, yes, sorry about that — the URL depends on the user.
So, go here instead, and then at the top, choose Unread.
I think I have already done that.
But just to make sure, I followed the link and tried again.
Note: This was after I cleared the cache and cookies
Could you try logging out of the forum account and login again?
I use same account for forum and site (hope I got the terms right 
). I have signed out from the site few times. Nothing changed. Just now I logged out from the forum. Unread notification is still there.
I now also have this PM-notification permanently. 
This night I had 4 ones: 1 for PM and 3 for topics/posts.
I opened all 4 pages and the icons disappeared. When I read the post on the 4th page, the PM notification suddenly popped up and has been irritating/annoying me ever since.
I’ve cleared cache + cookies on laptop and smartphone, logged out and logged back in and looked through my PMs - there are none unread.
