CITY/REGION: Oberhausen, Germany
MEETUP PLACE: Gasometer Oberhausen, Arenastraße 11, 46047 Oberhausen
DATE: 30th June 2024
TIME: 10.00 am - ~4 pm
MEETUP PLAN: The former Gasometer is a famous landmark and industrial heritage site and has been the home of many spectacilar exhibitions and art installations since its reopening for the public in the 1990s.
We will meet in front of the entrance towards the left side and then - as Gasometer exhibitions are very popular and attract a lot of visitors - have around 2,5 hours to explore the exhibition individually or in smaller groups. On top of the actual exhibition part itself there is usually a themed art/light projection under the dome of the building. From there one can also board the glass elevator for a spectacular ride up onto the roof of the building which offers great views across Oberhausen and the entire Ruhr region.

I have bought fifteen reduced price group tickets and will bring them with me in printed form as well as in QR codes. I have been told that we need to enter together with the whole group so I am asking you to be on time and let me know if you are going to run late. You will all get my phone number via message before the meetup. I will bring the cards for all those of you who have not asked to have them sent to you beforehand in my car, but will leave the handing out until we are at the restaurant because I don’t want to carry a huge bag inside Gasometer.
Please note that Gasometer has no heating or cooling system installed. Even in summer it tends to be somewhat colder inside than outside, so I do suggest carrying a light jacket with you unless it gets very hot next Sunday.
I have then booked (a) table(s) at Franziskaner restaurant a short(ish) walking distance away at 7, CentrO-Promenade where we can get together to write, sign and stamp lots of postcards as well as have food and drinks. The booking is for 1 pm - but please note: on Sundays the restaurant has a brunch buffet offer that ends at 1.30 pm. I was told it would be okay for us to arrive about half an hour earlier.
My suggestion for those of you arriving by car is using Arenastraße 11 for navigation systems. There should be sufficient parking if you arrive before Gasometer opening at 10 am in parking spaces P9, P10 and P11. To get to the Gasometer entrance you have to walk through an underpass, but since it is a pretty big building, you should not be in danger of getting lost.
Walking to the restaurant from Gasometer should take between 8-15 minutes depending on your personal walking speed. If - like me - you want to move your car closer to the restaurant, I suggest P3 where there should be ample space. This parking deck is only a short distance from the restaurant. It is also the best parking space for anyone coming directly to the restaurant.
Those of you arriving by public transport can take any bus or tram departing from Terminal 1 at Oberhausen Hbf. Get off at the stop “Neue Mitte”, descend to ground level and then move left for a short walk to Gasometer (about 5 minutes). The “Neue Mitte” stop sits at the top of CentrO-Promenade with the restaurant at its opposite end.
