In a philately magazine came across a publication about mail floating cans. The article indicates the use of postal buoys for philatelic purposes by some European countries, in particular Germany and Italy.
It was interesting to know the mail buoys are in use now.

I received a card mailed from one of those just last year 
Unfortunately the article is only available in German, but you can see a photo of it there:
It is emptied approx. every two days by a local sailing club and get a special rubber stamp from that club (+ the normal postal cancellation)
