I have ‘Send me an email when someone messages me’ set to ‘Always’ under my Email Settings but I don’t always get an email. I noticed this once in the past and today I received a reply to my message but wasn’t notified by email. The message was sent approximately 40 minutes ago. Is this a bug or will the email be sent only after a certain period has elapsed?
This is a known issue that was reported on the sandbox and which has already been fixed by the Discourse team. We will get the fix here when we upgrade to the next stable version.

Thanks for replying! I wasn’t aware of all the issues reported on the sandbox.
Discourse has been updated to the latest version and this should be fixed now.
