October 2021 NARR Report #1
First batch of cards to report.
#02 @SunShein : sent a shot of the iconic, but now overrun by tourists, “standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona” statue “attraction”. It sounds like the rest of your road trip on Route 66 was a little less hectic. Yes, I worry about the heritage of Route 66. Will the next generations still embrace it? My guess is no. The nostalgia for it will die off. Sadly. Thanks!
#05 @CarolReader: sent a terrific shot of four Goodyear blimps sailing over the skies of Akron, Ohio, a rare time that all four lighter-than-air crafts have flown together. This was a celebration of the newest dirigible, The Spirit of America, following its christening and official welcome to the fleet. Great card. Who doesn’t like blimps? Thanks!
#07 @TreeClimber: sent a new addition to my Appalachian Trail collection, a vintage scenic vista shot from Wildcat Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I follow several AT vloggers on YouTube and have hiked a stretch that cuts through New York. It’s nice to get a card from the northern section of the trail, as most cards I have feature views from below the Mason-Dixon line. Thanks!
#08 @Shesa-Renegade: sent a shot of the world’s largest crucifix from the Catholic Shrine in Indian River, Michigan. Probably more impressive than the 55-foot high redwood structure is the bronze corpus of Christ hanging on the cross. It alone weighs 7-tons, according to the card. Incredible the effort that goes into some things. Who dreamt this project up? “Don’t Go On Me The Ghost” rubber stamp = LOL! Thanks!
#13 @Ladybug513: Every year I can depend on Ladybug sending a fun Halloween card! This one shows a cherub-like devil climbing out of a jack o’lantern… out for a night of mischief one presumes! And a silly Halloween joke and vivid witch sticker, too. Sorry, I should have alerted you to the Hudson Valley meetup. I wasn’t sure I was going to attend until the night before, when I didn’t end up being called for Southern District of NY jury duty, thank goodness! Thanks and Happy Indigenous Autumn Squash Day!
#15 @NittanyLionRI: sent a pretty mountain stream scene from the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. Yes, autumn colors are running late in the Northeast. We have friends from Florida coming up because they miss the change of seasons and want to come up to see foliage, rolling hills, and farm lands. Yeah, about the only “mountains” you have in RI is the cliff house that Swift girl lives in! Thanks!
#16 @CrimsonKing: sent a Halloween card featuring the ominous grim reaper (complete with scythe!) standing before the full harvest moon. And a gentle reminder not to get too scared this spooky season. We’ve had two young families move into the neighborhood over the last year, so maybe, just maybe, we’ll get some trick-or-treaters this year… instead of eating all the leftovers! Thanks!
#17 @Yoiyumtewa: sent a vintage shot of the creepy Dutch Inn in Collinsville, VA. The windmill cropped to the top of the motel reminds me of the one the villagers set on fire in the 1931 film version of Frankenstein, which I just watched last night. The Inn still exists today, and has had a makeover (if not a total reconstruction) as a Quality Inn property, but they did replicate the windmill sails that now stick out from the fresco façade. Thanks for this classic motel view!
#19 @Ellistrations: sent a humorous addition to my Bigfoot collection, showing the big guy crossing a log in the woods, and, uncharacteristically, holding a flower. The softer, gentler side of the smelly monster! Halloween-themed stickers and washi tape on the back. Thanks!
#23 @NormaJean: sent an interesting view of the tonearm of a record player with an antique shell housing for the cartridge and needle. It’s interesting that vinyl has made such a resurgence over compact disc audio! When does a technology ever “swing backwards?” We’re the middle of decluttering, but I’m going to unbox my record collection from the 70s and 80s and rediscover some of its lots gems. Thanks! And thanks for the Oscar W. quote!
#24 @Roxy: sent the official 2021 Postcrossing World Postcard Day card. I need to become more strategic with this day moving forward, like you were! And who has a mother-in-law that has a bridge named after her, not to mention a ceremony to accompany the honor!? Deets please! Thanks!

Slowly getting my cards out this month. Most can expect them to arrive after the 15th.
