January 2023 German mail strike does not take place

I have had cards take twice as long to arrive in Germany, yet one that went fast recently. It is random (a crap shoot - referring to the casino dice game).

Last time the strike did not block the whole postal service, they striked just at single centres for a few days and then they changed. That had a massive impact, but the postal service did not break down completely.
The staff on strike only gets some strike pay from their union, but that is below their normal wages, so none of them can afford to strike continuously for weeks.

But it is also depending on where you send to. Not every postal worker is member of a union and therefore will not be on strike. Also as Deutsche Post used to be a state departmend civil servants are still working there and are by law not allowed to strike. Also Deutsche Post will hire temps. So if you send to an area where many union members are worlking it will not be more problematic to send to.

Deutsche Post was working slow even before they were on strike because many postal workers were on sick leaves and the ones working can’t cover it all. So even before the strike some people here did not receive their mail on a regular basis.

I drew up an address to Germany today. Should I wait a while until the strike is over?

Mail from Japan normally is fast, so just send and it maybe will reach its destination before the national postal strike starts. Even if not, your mail will slow down but it will reach its destination. It can happen that people only get mail maybe once a week, but I don’t think that mail will break down completely.

No. If everyone waits now it will make it even worse.

There isn’t even a decision if to strike or not to strike. The members of the labor union have time to decide until the 9th of March.

If they decide to strike a lot of mail will run up and of course “lying around” somewhere. And if then everyone decides to wait until the end of strike is announced a lot of more mail has to be handled. The chance for getting lost is higher than usual.

OK. as usual I send a card to Germany.
On the other hand, the card from Germany arrived normally. (In just a week or 10 days… Wow!)
It’s really “Keep Calm and Carry On”… :grinning:

Is there any more news about this?

The voting aboute the strike ends on Thursday, so on Thursday or Friday we will know if they’ll go on unlimited strike.
My opinion: The strike will take place and it will take weeks.

Sorry, the message is only in German and contains no further details, yet.
