GB country code v UK country code

I expect that this has been answered before but I cannot find the information. Why has the United Kingdom got the GB country code instead of UK?

Why GB?

Curious as to why the UK has one code instead of one for each country? Why isn’t Scotland SC, England EN etc? This question comes about because I recently noticed the GF range from Postal love has the United Kingdom as one of it’s countries with London as its capital, I found this odd as the UK isn’t a country. I wonder now if they went down the code list on Postcrossing?

If Scotland or Wales goes fully independent, then EN for England? Not sur if WA or CY for Wales then SC for Scotland and NI for Northern Ireland perhaps?
