Experiences as a newbie

If we exclude cards still on their way to you, we would have

arrival 10.Nov - adress given out 13.Nov
arrival 20.Nov - adress given out 20.Nov
24.11 - 25.11
25.11 - 9.12
26.12 - 10.12.
01.01. - 22.12
07.01. - 26.12

But as we already see here (after 25.11., adress is given out more often than actual due), the system works a bit more complicated.

Still, I don’t think that you adress sleeps in the system’s line for 32 days - the demand is too strong for that, esp. for rarer countries …

My very first address was of a quite demanding profile. I literally went to 6 newspaper stores and our town hall to search for local postcards. But alas, we are not touristy enough, I suppose. I felt a bit down, not being able to please the person, and tried to explain my failure. Now, I no longer feel so bad about it. I have collected quite a large stock of various cards (which is quite addictive) and usually find a suitable card. I have also come to realize that that first profile wasn’t the worst. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I actually like receiving cards from Germany. They arrive fast and the ones i got from Germany were all with some thought on what i might like.

That’s what is most important for me: the person who drew my adress gives some thought to the card, the text on it and sometimes there is even decoration!

I actually started swaping cards im Facebook groups in October 2020. Then i saw people organising there direct swaps on Instagram and i loved it. A lot of those people on IG have a link to their postcrossing profil. I was wondering what it is and googled it. So in November I started postcrossing.
I still swap far more via IG and FB - found some nice people who are also giving a lot of effort in decorating and writing the cards. With some it’s nearly like penpaling with postcards.

I found it out via YouTube. There was a girl I followed there and she was telling about Postcrossing. At first I didn’t think about it anymore, but then there was that stupid virus! Once I sensed out my first postcard, I was hooked

I was active on a subreddit were people would send cards for free to each other, and someone mentioned about this website.

That’s how I learned about it too  @birdsatemylunch

This is a day of Sorrow and Sadness. A pale sun shines weakly, barely visible through gray clouds. This is a day of Lamentation and Sadness, a cold wind courses through barren trees. This is a day of Ashes and Mourning, Postnord stops delivering every weekday.

The Swedish Post Office, Postnord, will only deliver every other weekday now in my area, so I can not look forward to checking my mailbox as I get home after work everyday any longer. I may have exaggerated my reaction to this change just a little above, but it is a little sad.

But this day, 1st February also marks one month for me here on Postcrossing. I’ve discovered that my town has very few places to get any postcards, though I’ve grabbed some, that some online orders from abroad are seemingly stuck in limbo, and that others arrive quickly. I’m also cutting back a little on other hobbies or extras in life, to be able to afford getting more cards, I do need to build a little stock.

I’ve also discovered that people I know are amused by me  (and probably soon annoyed, if I don’t stop talking about postcards)

I’ve sent 11 official cards, five have arrived and I’ve received two. I’ve moved a cork board I had in the kitchen to the living room, so I can look at my cards from the sofa. They are hanging from strings with tiny little clothespins. All three of them, apart from the two officiaI ones, I’ve also received one card in return for sending one to cheer someone else up. Hm, I think I’m going to call those Cheer them up Cards  I love those! I have sent a few and have a couple more on the way out, but I can’t send to everyone who ask for them :frowning:

I also got a flickr account, but obviously there’s not much there yet.

I know I’ve said this before, but I am truly amazed by how friendly and supportive this community is, I have seen very few rude or unpleasant posts. I’m sure tempers flare occasionally, we all have bad days, misunderstandings occur etc, but the overall impression I’ve got after a month is that you’re all a pretty nice bunch.

And this almost reads like a blog post.

I like your blogpost @Jarulf , it made me happy to read!

I am also sad for you that your post office will only deliver every other weekday now, I would be bummed out about that too!

I’m feeling like a newbie again at the moment (even though I’ve been a member for almost 13
years now!)

I just got back into Postcrossing after a long break and then Covid started happening, and I paused again. So now I’m back after another break and I am so happy to be back! I’ve missed this. And now I find that there is this new forum, and that it is a very fun place to be indeed. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m so excited about the cards I have traveling right now. I spent hours on selecting, writing and decorating them. I can’t wait to start receiving again too! :tada:

Hello @Loqi ,
Thank you for the kind words. and welcome back (though as a newbie it feels a little odd saying that)

I am a little disappointed with the Swedish Post office, but I understand why they are doing these changes even if I don’t like them much. On the upside, those days they do deliver, I get larger hauls!

And someone just favourited one of the cards I sent, so who can not be a little happy anyway? :man_dancing:

Belgian post decided that last year too. We see our mail carrier 2-3 times a week. Officially, they only come twice a week unless it is priority mail they have to deliver. I regret that too, but indeed I nearly always have mail now.

I think this may be a bit of an international trend, though I have no evidence to back that up  Postnord, seems to concentrate on getting their finances in order and handling parcels, rather than letters or postcards.

Wrote my first card just now in Swedish, and not within my own country. Lots of firsts today.

I would be sad too if the US mail were every other day. A few years back they considered eliminating Saturday mail, but decided not to; but I have definitely noticed a slowdown. I’m able to send/receive cards to Germany faster than within (some) locations of America.

Up here we still have five days delivery, but they said by 2022 all country will have every second day delivery, so it is just waiting for the change to happen  Bit sad to loose that daily “I wonder if I got anything today” wondering when on way to home from work, but then again I usually get fun post only couple of days per week so actually the change will not be that much and hopefully it will mean more mail on those days they have delivery.

It is a bit sad, yes and I’ll miss checking my mailbox regularly after work. But I did get a bunch of great things today.

We have 5 days delivery, but I see, that our postlady comes just on Tuesdays and Fridays, when the local newspaper must be delivered to the subscribers.

My second month of Postcrossing has come to an end, and I’m getting into things bit by bit. I’ve done several Direct Swaps, even though I’ve stated I’m not interested in that on my profile. Go figure.
I’ve sent a few more Cheer-em-up Cards, I have a visiting Sea-lion Unicorn
and am slowly, but surely getting sucked into this.
I’ve been looking for a new hobby for quite some time now, and tried a few things, but nothing has really stuck with me. I’ve wanted something that isn’t too expensive, doesn’t take up too much room (both money and space are limited), has a creative side and somewhat social, but not too much. I’m fairly introverted and have a touch of social anxiety, and generally prefer to hide in my flat, but once the Pandemic has calmed down a bit I will have to go out and visit a few places I have in mind to get more cards.

I think I’ve found my hobby now.

I’ve spent too much money on this, but I’m sure cardboard is very nutritious, so I won’t go hungry. All that money didn’t go to buy cards and stamps though, I’ve been looking into carving my own rubber stamps too, so I got some stuff for that. I haven’t started on that yet, but will soon. with something extremely simple like a leaf. Probably with a design stolen off the Internet, since my art skills are non-existent.
I also had a card made at Zazzle which I think turned out ok, so I ordered a few more to be sent out if I find suitable profiles to inflict them on. When it’s a little warmer I may head out and take some photos around town, I’m not a photographer but sometimes I luck out with a decent pic.

The mail has picked up and I’m getting a lot of wonderful cards. The problem with getting more wonderful cards from people, is that they are wonderful. I need more. I’m not really a collector at heart, probably why I never really got into philately, even if I dabble a little, but postcards seem to do something funny to my brain. So, since starting I’ve added several types of cards I want to get more of and am thinking of a few more, but I really don’t want my profile to become a long bullet list of various things to send me.

I know there was something else I was supposed to write about, but it’s gone. Maybe if I do another of these next month.

I’ve been here a year now. And it’s been great.
My level of participation has gone up and down, as I expect it does for a lot of us, and I had two longer periods of inactivity. I tend to get very enthusiastic in the beginning when I try things, a sort infatuation phase if you will, where everything is new and fun and shiny. And then, things run the risk of starting to feel like a chore. But the good phase lasted for a few months, I sent my official cards and swapped privately here on the forum and was pretty active (for me). I’ve never been one to socialise much, I’m introverted and get easily overwhelmed, so often keep a fairly low profile.
Then things slowed down a lot, and stayed that way until just recently. I have been taking up philately a little more focused recently, I’ve dabbled earlier, and this also led me to start sending cards again.
It’s funny, I’d almost forgotten how much fun it can be to draw a new address, finding a suitable card and trying to write something nice (even if I am rubbish at it). I had planned to go slowly now, just send a few cards, but I quickly maxed out on the cards I could send.
