MEETUP PLAN: Signing postcards, getting acquainted with the Belarusian Agricultural Library, celebrating International Mermaid Day, discussing Belarusian traditional culture, presenting rare agricultural books, communicating between postcrossers and librarians
One of the scientific libraries of the Republic of Belarus, I.S. Lupinovich Belarusian Agricultural Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (https://belal.by/), decided to support the direction of Postcrossing and conduct an official meeting event for postcrossers. Since March 29th is International Mermaid Day, we’re going to pay special attention to this topic.
The aim of this event is not only to sign postcards in the cozy atmosphere of the “book greenhouse” – a spacious reading room with comfortable workstations for users, in which book shelves harmoniously coexist with ornamental plants, but also to get acquainted with the Library itself. The event will consist of two parts: official and main.
During the official part, library representatives will tell us about some pages of the history of the Library and its modern development. Then one of Belarusian historian-ethnologists will tell us how our ancestors imagined mermaids and about the world of traditional Belarusian culture. Moreover, we will see an exposition of books about the traditional Belarusian culture from the library’s collection. Our historian-ethnologist will show and tell us some interesting things that can be found in these books, including some interesting information about mermaids.
In the second part of the event, we will get acquainted with the reading room, the collection of rare and valuable publications “Agricultural Book of the 19th – early 20th centuries”, and the exhibition complex of the Library. Thus, we will sign postcards in the space of an open collection of documents of the Belarusian Agricultural Library. In total, three types of postcards are planned: two postcards – with photos of the Library from the outside and inside, and one postcard – with a mermaid.

We hope that this meetup at the Belarusian Agricultural Library will be an interesting joint event between the Postcrossing movement and the library community.
