Exactly this. There was even more important discussion before about translation thread in the forum, that’s clearly violate the rule of “don’t post the written side of the card” which is now solved with updated rules
So I never think a different language is that much an issue for me personally as I have seen worse violation
At least when someone doesn’t write English profile I can assume they don’t know English that good. So I can save my energy not to write complex sentences reducing the chance of my written side of the card getting posted somewhere else for translation (if they do it). It would feel better for me than a great profile written in English using translator, but in fact they might still don’t understand English well too irl when they get fully written English text. The message may confuse them
I agree with this. There are many profile written in English that say they only know basic English so they prefer their messages on the card to be simple. Ideally I think this is the best choice for users who don’t understand English well.
The connection part isn’t a problem for me because on the official site the connection only happens shortly unlike on the forum. I draw an address, maybe not written in English, I can use translator to read it and know what’s written there and send them a card. When I don’t understand the language and don’t want to put an effort, a simple happy postcrossing message can be sent. It’s frowned upon but I guess that’s just action = reaction thing
This is only when they even know there’s rule within postcrossing that English should be used. To my understanding a lot of users don’t even read the rule and community guidelines, FAQ to begin with. Which is why we still can see repeated questions pop up in forum about what can be found already on the main site.
I think there’s a difference about knowing written English and skill to write in English. So it’s something else. Like someone knows conversation in English but they don’t know how to form a sentences to reply. If their browser auto translated to their own mother tongue I assume they can still grasp the idea on how to register a card
It’s not making a new issue out of it rather than giving solution by using device (the issue is whether they want or they won’t). And I’m saying that mostly for us who happily can enjoy discussion on the forum which I think it’s probably not an issue for us here to treat the non English profiles just as English profile (since we know how to translate it)
As for what happen outside the forum with other users, we never know and we’ll only give opinion based on our anecdoteal examples
In conclusion I agree that profile should be written in English, but personally for me it’s not a fatal violation that needs to be reported. If there’s someone wants to report it it’s good, with hope that the profile can be changed to a language most of us understand. But I don’t want to give extra work by reporting it when I know the page will be translated on my device
