Yes, the literal translation is “commercial break”, but the joke is the double meaning, because you can also understand it as “taking a break from advertising”.
The wall shown in this postcard is one which is normally used for big advertising banners in Germany.

Oh, really? I guess I’m too old for that, I still say “Sendepause” (broadcasting break) - never heard “Werbepause” used to shut someone up.

I guess “Sendepause” come from the time, when there only was the one channel on TV and nothing to watch in the late night (except Testbild/ white snow - is this the correct english word?)
